Although followers of Charles Dickens will be familiar with themes of social satire and unflinching realism, most will find Hard Times to be remarkably enthusiastic on both fronts. It's Dickens at his most earnest, exploring the hypocrisy of the supposedly upstanding wealthy of Victorian industry while pulling no punches about the hard working conditions which they forced onto others to amass their wealth. It's quite an experience and despite shorter than most of his other works carries no less weight for it.
